Scarlet Letter Insanity

Cas Wilson 1999 (United States)

I feel I shall go mad
With the flat-lining signals
Of my energetic brain,
That screech in my ears
And the plead for consolation.
But no being on this wide earth
May hear them but me.

I crave the clatter of smashing plates and
Banging pots and pans
In a chorus of unchained ecstasy
And harrowing flashes
Of a life I am not living.

Hellfire resides in my organized mind
Burning at the prim composure
Of lipstick smiles and ironed clothes
Nothing that should be flammable
Ever seems to be.

Why not climb out the window
Where I may stand admiring the horizon
And climb upon rickety old roofs
Ripping off garments of confinement
And scream?

They say I have the mark of insanity
Upon my demented genes
A scarlet letter upon my breast.
I myself cannot fathom
How one can look out a window all day
And not feel the need to scream.
