I Know

The tables took too long to turn
Seemingly traveling in slow motion
Because the heart and eyes never agree
I seen it coming
But I wasn’t ready for it to leave
Where does the blame for this sorrow lie
When I agreed to one thing
But on the next breath wanted something more
Trapped in my imagination
Because the light in your eyes baits me in
I see hope at the end of the tunnel
But my soul screams stop lying to yourself
That fairy tale you’re weaving will leave you grieving girl
But I ignore that nagging feeling and swallow my pride
I’m right back playing your game
But this time I’m determined to win
Now you’re complaining that I’m distant
But it was your hand that pushed me this far
I’m not picking up the phone
I’m not responding to a text
Now I’m acting funny
No sir I’m acting accordingly
Men lead and this is the tone you set
However I won’t say the time was wasted
There’s so much that I’ve learned
So much I would’ve missed about myself
If I knew then what I know now…

Retta Bright

My Heart Beats for Poetry! My love affair with poetry ignited like a firework back in fourth grade. Thanks to my amazing teacher, Mrs. Wheeler, I was tasked with crafting my very own poem. As I stood in front of my classmates, sharing my heart's creation, I knew that this was the beginning of a lifelong romance with poetry. more…
