Invisibly shackled

Invisibly shackled

Being a woman has a clear definition
We crave authenticity and celebrate “real women”
But shun anything short of perfection
Freedom and liberty is preached
But never actually accepted
A woman who follows the desires of her heart
Is inevitably rejected
For men and women
The physical world may be the same
But it takes only a single misstep
Before a woman is blamed
We’ve made progress you say
Taken steps towards equality
But the world of contradictions we live in
Is nothing short of insanity
For now we want an imperfectly perfect woman
One who is strong but not combative
Free but not wild
Looks beautiful without trying
For it isn’t enough to simply give your best
One failure one mistake
Overshadows every success
In some ways
We are free now
And are no longer chained
But being able to walk around
DOESNT mean you’re not still jailed
And the heart breaking truth is
We will never break the shackles
Of the patriarchy so deeply ingrained
