Misguided By Society

Robert T. Davenport 1979 (Newark, New Jersey)

Misguided By Society
By Robert T. Davenport

In the depths of society's embrace, I stand,
A soul misguided, lost in its command.
For it whispers in my ear, with persuasive might,
Dictating my path, blinding my inner light.

From a tender age, I was taught to conform,
To fit into molds, to weather life's storm.
But in this quest for acceptance, I lost my way,
Becoming a puppet, dancing to society's sway.

I chased after success, defined by wealth and fame,
Ignoring the whispers of my heart, the inner flame.
I molded my dreams to fit their narrow mold,
Leaving behind my passions, my stories untold.

I measured my worth by the numbers on a scale,
Believing beauty was defined by a societal tale.
I starved my soul, seeking validation from others,
Unaware that true beauty lies within, not in the covers.

I followed the crowd, afraid to stand alone,
Suppressing my voice, my thoughts left unknown.
I silenced my truth, fearing judgment and shame,
But in doing so, I lost sight of my own name.

Oh, society, you are a master of deception,
Leading us astray, clouding our perception.
You dictate our values, our desires, our dreams,
Leaving us empty, lost in your relentless schemes.

But I refuse to be a pawn in your game,
To let your expectations douse my inner flame.
I will break free from your suffocating hold,
Embracing my authenticity, my story yet untold.

For I am more than the labels you impose,
More than the standards you seek to impose.
I am a soul, unique and beautifully flawed,
And I will rise above, guided by my own accord.

So, society, your grip may be strong,
But I will not let you define where I belong.
I will reclaim my voice, my purpose, my might,
And forge a path that is true, in your misguided sight.
