Ornaments

Once a year
A box of ornaments helps spread cheer

They come in an old box
An angel, a teddy, a felt fox

They cover a tree
Displayed for everyone to see

But they are more than just decoration
I don’t think this needs explanation

Some have been faded
A dolly’s hair no longer braided

A tin soldier starting to rust
All of them covered in dust

They are from decades past
Worn out but the memories last

Their beauty is not in what is seen
But what the cracks and the rust mean

So once a year, I put them on a tree
For everyone to come and see

Excuse me if they bring a silver tear to me eye
Because they remind me of years gone by

About this poem

This poem is about going through a box of old Christmas ornaments and the memories associated with them. The ornaments are old and worn, but the memories associated with them make them beautiful.
