Horses Rush and Babies Crawl

Horses rush and babies crawl
To the spring for water’s fill,
Steel-eyed for the long haul.

Bounding from the stable's stall
Or pining at the window sill,
Horses rush and babies crawl

Saddled with a road that sprawls
Before them through the heaving hills,
Steel-eyed for the long haul

of sterling summers soon become the falls
Of feral wind that can’t be reigned. Yet still,
Horses rush and babies crawl.

And each one, soft, from silence calls
With weakness for a stay of will,
Steel-eyed for a long haul

Whose winter blanket by and by assumes the pall
That drapes his blesséd grist ground at the mill.
Horses rush and babies crawl,
Steel-eyed for the long haul.
