Shatter Me

Aubree Alborn 2008 (Alaska)

SHATTER ME
One day you walked into a porcelain shop
Filled to the brim of beautiful things
Wonder filled your eyes
You were enraptured
CAUGHT
When you bought us
We settled in your bag
Feeling you jostle and sway
As you whistled a merry tune
Finding home was hardest
Exiting into a kitchen
Full of brightness and joy
Amazement
Happiness
You set us down
Ate on us
Washed us
Put us to bed in your glass cabinet
glass
Glass
GLass
GLAss
GLASs
GLASS
Everywhere
I am made of fragile pieces
Taking up every care you could give me
One day
You stop
Caring
You throw us in wooden cabinets
We never see the day of light
One day
We are taken out
Moved to the table
Right then
Right there
You do not care
You drop us

Right then
Right there
Right on the floor
My broken pieces catch the last shards of sunlight
Coming through your glass window
You sigh
Get a dustpan
Sweep me
Throw me away
Move me
Away
Into a horrid place
I
Never
See your face again
You have thrown me away

About this poem

This poem is about a man going to a China shop and grabbing a beautiful China bowl. He uses and uses this piece and puts it on his most desired shelf. Eventually the bowl ends up in the dirty wooden cabinets. Before long he shatters the bowl and throws it away in the trash. Representing a relationship being thrown away and forgotten in the dark.
