Nurturing Angel

And the demon of my dream
was the most nurturing angel.
Her accusing eyes, like silver spikes,
and chains clanked at every step.

"Will you come with me?"
– No, never; tombs, dead,
and decayed frighten me.

But her cold and coarse hand
clenched my innocent palm,
and I stumbled into the dawn;

I felt hunger in my teeth and bones,
the lashes of her tongue like blades,
and the icy flames of her cradle,
that cooled the hearth of my soul.
