Does Santa Know?

Claudette Timas 1983 (Boston, MA)

We've had Christmas in the summer
And Christmas in the cold.
We've spent Christmas overseas
And even all alone.

We've moved from base to base
Sometimes never even seeing a familiar face.
So I'm worried Santa won't know
How to find me and where to go.

I carefully think and write my letter
Because it's for me and my brother; together.
Then I ask my mom, "Will Santa know?"
She says, "Yes, of course! He will follow."

When I'm done, I'm filled with hope
And quickly place a stamp on my envelope.
I even ask my dad, "does Santa have an APO?"
He smiles and says,
"There is just one North Pole Place.
Don't you worry. It will get there, post haste."

I look over my card one more time
Making sure that everything is fine.
It's now time to slide it in the slot
But I'm thinking, should I add a forget-me-not?
Then I remember:
It doesn't matter what post we chose
Santa always knows.

About this poem

This poem is about being a military child and not always having traditional Christmases or holiday celebrations. It is in honor of my own children who are military kids and have the lived experience. It is my reminder to them, that we can make amazing memories and the best of every situation if we remain positive.
