Dare to go Deep

Going deep doesn’t make you a nerd.
You’ll learn as you dig and then you may share
With fellow enquirers who like to be heard.
You’ll keep the friends who are aware.
Critical thought and creative play
Combine to test the logic of science
Throughout history people had their say.
Many agreed and some hurled defiance.
I was inspired to dig six levels deep -
First ask, “do you believe in such and such?”
They may say “yes,” off the cuff, no lost sleep;
They may say, “no,” or “not so much.”
In that case on to the next layer – “why?”
They may be programmed to put up a wall.
Mind saying, “retreat now for this is scary”
When they sense they’ll have to ignore some or all
Of their habitual thoughts and, thus, are wary.
Question deeper, now layer number three;
What makes you so sure of your point of view?
By now, from experience, many just flee.
However, openness germinates here for a few
Who start to wonder, “where you are going?”
“What is the reason behind the lifting of veils
Who, where and what are we overthrowing?
Could, would we be heretics, if free-thinking fails?”
At this stage, thoughts are really flowing
You’ll arrive at level six, which is the crux.
How do you feel, with this unlocked truth?
Are you still perplexed, heavy, in flux?
Or sourcing joy, regained freedom of youth?
The exercise done, gracefully, with wit,
Will still have caused tension and more to leave;
Whereas without fear, you and I now sit,
Knowing how to arrive at what to believe.
