memories

The years grow short as I grow old,
Not surprising so I'm told.
And memories, stretched thin by time,
Float and shimmer through my mind.
Like faded snapshots in a book,
They call at me to pause and look.
And I can spend some time with them,
Remembering the where and when,
The good, the bad, the special things,
From childhood days to wedding rings.
Dusty shelves in hidden places
Hold long-forgotten words and faces.
And everything seems softer now
The years have taken care somehow,
To tidy up a cluttered space,
And simplify with style and grace.
So that's all icing on the cake,
But I'm not one to sit and bake,
Not while there's still some time to take,
And memories for me to make.
