The Road I Chose

Arman Hoque 1977 (Winnipeg)

The Road I Chose
By Arman Hoque

Inspired by and incorporating
“The Road Not Taken”
By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

I contemplated both paths and weighed,
The merits of each path as I stayed.
Wanting to know more than I could see…
If I chose one path, what direction would it take me?

I Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

I searched not fortune nor fame.
I was playing life’s rules; learning life’s game.
I chose one path and it lay ahead.
I proceeded forward, bothered by choices in my head.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I proceeded thus onto unknowing path,
Delving into fate’s unknown wrath.
But as I continued on and on at last.
Realization came to me fast.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Life inspired me by taking a chance.
I entered walking and learned to dance.
Two paths before me - I have yet to choose.
Which path down will I have more to lose?
On which path do I have the most to gain?
If I was standing there, I’d walk again the same.
