I Shall Never Forget!

                       I Shall Never Forget!
By: Richard David Briggs
Dedicated to: The Armed Forces

Military wreaths, earned crowns for our blessed laid to rest,
Committed combatants, notable exploits, recalled to mind,
Our brave went to fight the good fight, gave their very best!
Many, supreme sacrifice paid, freedom in our country, find.

Weathered names carved on Cenotaph of forgotten faces!
Heroes fallen, who once smiled, cried, showed sincere love!
Their sacred dust crypt in cemeteries, urns, foreign places,
Such valiant spirits reside - not here - but with God above!

At eleven hundred fighters fly by, national flag at half-mast;
Anthem sung! Rifle salute! Padre’s prayers, Dignitaries talk;
Last Post bugled, our awed silence, for comrades passed;
Teary-eyed, pensive, remember Armed Forces’ lives lost!

Alerted attending soldiers await Sergeant of Arms orders:
‘Attention! Quick march!’ Bagpipes, drums resound, leave.
Suddenly awakened, stranded between life-death borders!
We, left in their stead, reality returns, with new vision, see!

November eleventh breeze blows brown leaves to ground,
I depart, shall never forget these soldiers safe and sound!

About this poem

This poem is about all fallen soldiers in wars and the veterans who returned home from fighting for Freedom to keep the Free World safe. They, my father too in WW2, and their family members all suffered immensely, including mine! Thank you for your courage and fortitude! So much appreciated for our lives spared!

Richard David Briggs

I, Richard David Briggs, am presently retired and living in Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada. I was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and graduated from Admiral Westphal High School, located not far from the Shearwater Naval Base, where I was much influenced by the presence of the Amed Forces during and after WW2. Having an Irish, Scottish, and British background, I was richly exposed to my parents’, and grandparents’, pronounced European accents, mannerisms, traditional values, customs, dress, stories, poems, songs, and dances, as well as to the history of their old countries which they cherished! In conclusion, I enjoy revealing a person’s unique characteristics, the individual process of their determined rationale, especially their carefully calculated actions, including the satisfying reward of their expectations, as well as the chilling shock of their unexpected dire consequences. Lastly, as responsible mature people, I feel we have a moral duty to remember Life’s memorial incidents so the brave will not fade into oblivion! more…

    My father survived WW2 (1939-1945) but not all of his crew did! Yet, the war took its toll on him - a changed man! - His courage helped me to become a better man!
