Stick and mend

My dad could stick and mend
He worked a job to the end
He built a life full of family
Yet stuck to the old and the new
Somehow he always knew
What to do
To last in this life
To stick not break
Yet he drank
And sank in every bank
Then got up and fixed it again
His hands grew thick
His boots black
He worked from pup to pump
But all I saw was my dad
Now he's gone
I'm a little sad
His hugs were long
Now I feel bad
They taught me I was good
I'm still good
That stuck
But I'm sure
I can't stick and mend
I'm just not part
of that trend
