Still bells

Heather Lydia Thornhill 1981 (Manchester)

I always thought I'd hear the bells chiming for my special day.
But alas it was not meant to be.
One person asked me to marry them but he was too old for me to say.
I asked 3 special people if I was marriage material to them.
Could I be the perfect stem to their blossoming life?
One said 'not to my family' because of race.
So I withdrew to stew on it with grace and to save face.
One said... no! without explanation.
His body was too nice to mention but alas there was no retention.
One perfect catch said yes, bought 4 rings then 13 years later still sings when asked are you married: 'she wishes'.
So I watch the still bell grow fat on my stomach yet still do his dishes ready for Christmas dinner.
I'm 42, now so I'm calling him hubbs while he's calling me chubs sometimes too.
He doesn't see our bells anymore but I still do.
