Elusive Organ

To reach your soul
My arms crawl through your veins
And rip open peepholes
To peer out at my progress.

I thought I'd be done
When I found your heart.
But that was only the center
Of something greater than the both of us.

I don't know the number of beats
That's normal for your heart.
I don't even know mine.

What I do know is that it changes
When I'm excited to see you
Come through the door
And I free fall into my mind
Where laughter lies on parachutes
And my parachute always deploys
The air caressing me
Onto safe grounds.

I could perform surgery in another life
Surrounded by hospital beds
Occupied by empty vessels.
But I still don't think I'd find
That elusive organ
Your soul.

I could search through chest cavities
And open mouths all day
But never find it.
