Poison’s Lament

How I long to be the air in someone’s lungs,
And the blood that pumps the heart.

Instead, I feel like a poison—
Infecting the brain,
Sucking life out of a body—
Trying to cure my own maladies,
And alleviate my own pain.

I hope it didn’t hurt.

I wish I was the remedy.

But I am not,
And I am sorry.

About this poem

I wrote this poem to express my feelings about my relationships and how I feel when they are coming to an end. My longing to bring happiness to someone that I love battles with my deepest fear of being a burden and 'infecting' people with misery when I find myself in a depression. I am sorry if you too have felt this pain.
