Midnight Arrears

Nkosingvile Mpungose 2002 (South Africa)

"Can I sleep with you, Pete." (Diana)
"Sure, why not mom?" (Pete)
"The doctor says I have six months left." Diana
"That sounds interesting." (Pete)

"I saw the devil today." (Diana)
"Were you looking at the mirror again?" Pete
"I do not want to die, Pete." (Diana)
"Do not worry its just going to sleep, there is
nothing to fear and I have heard it is better,
 than living forever." (Pete)

"Do you think I am going to Heaven?" (Diana)
"No" (Pete)
"Am I a good person." (Diana)
"No and maybe that is not a bad thing, mom"P
"Don't waste your time trying to be someone,
you are not because you might not live to,
 regret yourself."(Pete)

"Now rest up because we have to go to the
 strip club tomorrow." (Pete)
"Are, the go-go dancers hot?" (Diana)
"Like chilli"(Pete)
"There is this one who has the tighest ass I
  have ever seen." (Pete)

"I love you, Pete." (Diana)
"I wish I could say the same."(Pete)
"F*ck you, I am going back to my room." Diana
"Finally." (Pete)

About this poem

The poem is a conversation between Pete and his mom who suffers from cancer and has a few months left, as Pete sarcastically tries to genuinely answer her questions about life, death and the afterlife . The inevitability of our own death when pondered results in depression at best and insomnia at the very least. Sometimes the most difficult is getting up off the bed, life has no meaning, so just live your life and enjoy the present because we are all going to die and unfortunately we all have to live as well so do not stress.
