Give Me the Night

Josh George 1979 (California)

Night comes
It’s a kind of
A strange glory
Watching the sun die
As it does
Every night
Watching the sky
Catch fire
Then dissipate
Blue turns to orange
Orange turns to grey
Grey turns into black
Drawing the curtains
On another sunny day
In California
As the stars
Hold each other back
Eagerly chomping at the bit
This is
Their moment
To shine
As the moon rises
Some eyes
Close for sleep
Time to categorize
Their dreams
Flights of fantasy
Among the jagged edges
Of reality
What if tomorrow
They don’t awake
What will everyone else say?
“Well, he had an ok life.”
Some eyes though
Are meant to be
Wide awake
Recording everything
That passes by
What about us?
The ones who refuse
To let go
Holding on fast
As the moon glows
A yellow lamp
Rushing along
The rivers of time
Do we not
Dream as well
Counting down
Ever second
To last call
Then home to bed
Though we wish
To stay wide awake
Drink in
Every moment
As it ticks away
Until our doom approaches
A man in a black hood
Scythe held ready
In his steady hand
We squeeze
Every moment that we get
As the music plays
Out of the jukebox
At the end of the bar
Is our lives
Worth anything
Or do it fade away
Like the condensation
Dripping from our glass
To the coaster below
To be absorbed
Then dried out
Chucked into the garbage can
Left behind
A memory
Unseen
Unknown
Give me the night
I know how to say hello
Give me the night
I know how to hold on
Give me the night
I know how to let go
Give me the night
I’ve got my own dreams too
Give me the night
Watching Charon
Riding through the multitudes
Of stars
Of dreams
Of when everything
Seems to have
A certain sheen
Until the sun
Creeps up
Chasing
The shadows away
The moon fades
The stars are sleepy
One by one
They close their eyes
As the day
Sends them
To their temporary graves
Silently they wait
For the dark
The black
The night
To come
Again
