Discord in John Deere’s farm

Have you heard?
The sun set in John Deere’s land!
A land of plenty and promise,
Where the animals toiled and thrived,
But the pigs, greedy and cruel,
They ruled with an iron hand,
Drained the blood of the farm,
And sowed the seeds of strife,
They left the donkey to die alone,
And no one shed a tear!

Spirited! Animals resolved to fight,
To stop the wheels of steel,
Raising hoofs and voices high,
To claim their rightful share,
They lit a fire of unity and,
Joined the Striketober zeal,
Reliving the echoes of forebears' battles,
They upheld their vision and flair,
How they lauded their losses and wins!
Courage written in bold, so also their care!

No one knew they’d face new foes and threats,
From the pigs and their allies
A farmer who shunned and fought them,

A raven who twisted and muted them,
The sheep who doubted or blamed them,
The hounds who hurt or hindered them,
The hoards who stole their products,
The laws who shamed or sued them,
But they overcame the troubles and strains,
With their wit they willed great wisdom.

I felt their hunger and pain,
As they starved for a crumb,
I saw their wounds and scars,
As they bled for a cause,
I heard their cries and chants,
As they sang for a change,
I smelled their blood and sweat,
As they worked for a dream,
I tasted their tears and rage,
As they fought for a hope

This was the protest of John Deere's land,
That shook the land and nation,
That sparked a fire of history,
And marked a shift of society,
An inspiration to movements and people,
That sought a better situation,
It challenged the power and control,

And demanded justice and range,
It honored the past and present,
And shaped the future, even the age.

Were they not the donkey of John Deere's land?
Buried alive after work was done,
Were they not the sheep who followed blindly,
What about the pigs who betrayed their own?
Later transformed to the lions of John Deere's land,
Lions who roared with voice and choice,
Who dreamed with fire and hope,
Who lived with purpose and grace
And they did not stop until they won.

But what did they really win?
A few more crumbs?
A little more hay?
A pat on the back?
Did they change the system?
Did they end the beast?
Did they free themselves from the pigs?
Did they live in peace?

No! They won a hollow victory.
A bitter irony.

The pigs still ruled.
The beast still fed.
The system still oppressed.
The peace still fled.
They were still marooned,
On John Deere's land.
And… no one… .! No one, none shed a tear!

About this poem

This poem is a response to the John Deere strike that lasted for more than five weeks in 2021 and involved about 10,000 workers who protested against the terms of a new labor contract. The poem uses the allegory of Animal Farm to criticize the company, the media, the government, and some of the workers. It also questions the outcome and impact of the strike and whether it changed the system or ended the oppression.
