A Doctor's Duty

Esiobu Chisikamdi Vivian 2002 (Anambra state)

                 A Doctor's Duty

He is a confederate soldier
He's run to me for safety
He needs a second life
Checking on him
It isn't too late to have one
But he is a foeman.

I don't want to meet my dad now
I have a mother
I have a wife and a daughter
Who's clocked a month just yesterday
awaiting my return.
He claims

That doesn't make you
qualified to be saved.
Remember who you are?
 just a foeman!
Meaning ,your life
really doesn't matter to the states.

Remember the day of your convocation,
Remember you took an oat,
To not permit considerations
of race, religion, political affiliation,
nationality, sexual orientation or
social standing to influence your duty of care.

Should I save him?
Should I let him waste?
I kept questioning myself.
I should have walked away,
But,
Remembering my declaration
as a new doctor,
and being reminded of my pasts,
I wouldn't want a second me
I gave in.
Giving him a chance to live again.
