One Day At The Super Market

William A. Tatum 1953 (Washington, D. C.)

One Day At The Supermarket

Tuesday was our shopping day,
but storms were on the way,
So we stood fast until it passed,
to try the following day.

Well, Tuesday passed with darkened skies,
yet, not a single drop.
By late that day, we'd burned away
the perfect chance to shop!

So, Wednesday comes and all is well;
they called for "pm" rain.
but as we shopped, a fierce rain dropped
from "The Storm Without Constrain"!

To add insult to injury,
they re-arranged the store!
Old folks confused, and not amused
can't find what they came for!

Back and forth, and round and round,
the baffled shoppers shopped;
with slowing paces and flustered faces
as their carts got stopped.

It was a storm within a storm
with bedlam in the aisles,
but more and more throughout the store
some folks still managed smiles.

A funny sight to watch
old bargain hunters bumping carts
who need to take a coffee break
before their hunt re-starts.

It was "The Supermarket Sweep"
and bumper cars combined;
they should confess they made a mess,
and someone should resign!

About this poem

This was a crazy experience I had once at the local super market that I couldn't help writing about.
