the snake

The freeman lays bricks at his
forebears bequest

Layer on layer, the thickness of his walls reflected in the fingers of the hand

The bones of man

“Man what a man”

The walls contain that which was unreined
Unruly, unrefrained,
A snake that needs guiding and taming,

To his undying shaming

He’s a slave to his own path, designed by a foreman

A stairway to heaven is crossway to torment,

Closing walls give way to pressure,
That which guide is also a censure.

The squeeze is a comfort and also a vise,
All men seek avowal and also think twice.

About this poem

The snake by Elaine Wilson is a poem about the pressure of manhood and the humiliation of the prescription they are given to solve their existence. It attempts to convey empathy and sorrow for the narrow light masculinity is allowed to exist in.
