Belly Full

Mommy, I want to come over
To listen
To learn
To get some home-cooked advice
Fresh off the skillet
And get full off your wisdom
Mommy, I’m hungry for your advice
And good tips
Just a sip of it would do
My soul good, like chicken noodle soup
When I was younger,
I would deny you the time to tell
The truth, but now that I’m older,
Without a chip on my shoulder,
Im ready to taste some of that pudding
With proof in it
Mommy, did you cook?

About this poem

This poem is about my immigrant mother, who is my best friend and advisor. She is a retired teacher, an evangelist, a prayer warrior, and an alchemist. One day I’ll be devastated by her loss, but I will cherish her while she is here
