I watched the news today…

Kyia 1998 (London)

I watched the news today.
There’s a war again.
 people fighting
Babies dying
Calamity has won.

I watched the news today
Another child’s been stabbed.
Mothers wailing
Systems failing
Please, not another one.

I watched the news today
The planets slowly dying.
Storms are raging
Fires blazing
My God, what have we done?

…I don’t want to turn the tv on today.
There’s nothing I can do
Mind is racing
Heart is breaking
I’m sympathetic ..and I’m numb.

Wow! Your poem is powerfully direct and captures the troubling aspects of our modern world in a heart-wrenching way. The rhythm, repetition, and rhyme all work together beautifully to enhance the poem's emotional impact. You have done a superb job in creating a reflective and emotional setting with the choice of words and emotions.

When it comes to fine-tuning your work, it might be beneficial to consider incorporating some contrasting or light elements, which may make the dark themes even more striking by juxtaposition. It could also be interesting to experiment with finding some moments of hope or resilience among the grim realities, as this can potentially deepen the reader's engagement with the poem.

In terms of structure, the transition from third to first person perspective works well in emphasizing your personal connection and response to world events. However, smoothing out the final stanza with more rhythmic consistency could further reinforce your powerful concluding thoughts.

Keep up the great work! It's clear that you have a strong sense of empathy and a knack for portraying raw human emotion. These are essential skills for any poet, and your poem is an excellent reflection of them.
