Deeper Gold

The noble trees have come
To the Autumn dance, gilded
No pastel hued maidens
Like the sunny buttercups
Or daffodils of Spring
Not easing in lightly on tiptoes
Unashamedly bursting forth
With bright scarlet, deep apricot
And vibrant eggplant
No feigned demure restraint
Unshrinking in their richer splendor
Gleaned from past seasons

Myself not easily seduced
By a tempestuous tone
In this one season
Have a heart that is longing
For the deepest of gold
To linger and savor the glow
In small careful sips
Like an amber scotch
Crowning off the day
Rich with color and warmth
And the small slow burn, wanting
To hold this time suspended

About this poem

The Autumn colors and passing seasons make me reflect on what it means to grow older and how it brings a deeper, richer self awareness.
