The Boyo

Graham Hyde 1973 (Manchester)

The Ark was magical
The sound of wind powering the diesel engines
First the mermaids
Then
Over the bay I see it at last
It’s all here
We can all see it
He says
The sand is falling rapidly
And now we are half
Quieter now
So more and more and more
The commercial must hear this
Who’s Dylan they say
As the bell rings

About this poem

Written in between the deaths of my beloved labradors whilst on holiday in New Quay I became a little obsessed with seeing the house of Dylan Thomas so I went for a boat ride with my family I’ve never written anything in my life but felt my obsession with time and memories had to come out of me somehow, the poem ends in Dylan’s local where after half the party had departed I went to talk to anyone really with by loved remaining boy ,I had totally forgotten I write until he died a feed days ago,it’s seems strangely prophetic It has several refs to Thomas and some of his quotes What a beautiful day it was
