Silence being the only thing in my arsenal

Siyamthanda 2008 (Buffelspruit)

When I was younger
The sound of my voice used to catch me off guard
That I trained my teeth
How to become barricade
And how to treat speech like an unwelcome visitor

Being exposed to pornography
At the age of 6
Only trained me how to be a mute spectator
How to express my self through tears
which aren't going to be heard by anyone
Trauma
Anxiety
And depression ,became a part of me
That my vocal cords decided to lock themselves in

Silence being the only thing in my arsenal
I never treated speech as part of my life
But silence as my best friend
I only knew how to be silent
Like my Maya Angelou and Lee mokobe
Who only knew quiet like a caged bird

The only thing that ties the three of us is our silence
But using poetry as a way to fight back
Using poetry, honesty and sincerity as our greatest weapon
And Expressing ourselves through poetry

I still treat speech like an unwelcome visitor
But I learnt how to raise my voice
Share my pain
And sufferings
Through poetry

About this poem

This poem is about my childhood experience which I haven't been able to come to terms with it but writing a poem and sharing it with other teenagers and everyone out there can only soothe my pain
