Growing a worthy man from a boy
I must have wronged raising my son!
Given he values nothing of
What's been given.
Treating all gestures of kindness
As though they were owed
While believing nothing is owed
To those who're giving.
Why does he feel crippled
Trying anything new
Or has all constructive criticism
Get drowned by attitude.
Pouring blood, sweat and tears into raising him
Feels so wrong
Eventhough intended to make him better.
How do I make my son feel that he is strong,
When he gets blown off course
By any inclimate weather
How can he value anything that he owns
If it all feels gained
By lifting a feather.
A parent is not permitted to think
All stones were unturned.
As objectively, it is known
Only end results matter.
I suppose it's impossible
To grow a worthy man from a boy
By serving him all on a silver platter.
About this poem
After my son turned 6, I have gone through many moments that forced me to reflect and self assess the efficacy of my parenting approach. Personally I have found finding faults and admitting them is quite challenging, but both pale in comparison to taking corrective actions. In the end, the thing I keep reminding myself is that the chance to raise your kid right is just that, a chance... and it is one that I want to say I have taken giving nothing but my best though knowing I will not always be on the right path. more »
