Coming Home in the Dark

The green front door creaks open-
What’s waiting on the other side.
An abyss with a stream of light to guide
To the room of living that hides.

Empty. Still. Darkness.

Once filled with the guided light-
Waiting for me to arrive to greet.
The noises in the background fill the void
Until the chatter voice stays to meet.

Yearning for just one more day-
To walk inside to see you a final time.
Memories hitting like a pound of bricks
Making the mountain harder to climb.

As time slowly goes on-
A hole starts to get bigger and deeper within.
The longing, the guilt, the pain
It doesn’t seem to go away, but instead begins.

Reliving the please be quiet moments-
As those are hard to forget.
Listening to the sound of my voice with a smile
You always seemed to never live with regret.

The strength from within unites-
As it was passed on from that night.
The hope of tomorrow was never promised
But it is what’s guiding us to fight.

We live on to remember-
To tell our children of an amazing warrior.
He watches from above and seeks
To live through us as a mirror.

As a parting goodbye-
He still remains as promised.
Not a day goes by without a single thought
Always to be dearly missed.

About this poem

A girl and her father used to live together in an apartment. Whenever he had passed away from cancer the girl ended up living in the apartment by herself. It’s about the girl having to enter without seeing her father there to greet her. Her view on how she’s been coping with his loss.
