Periphery

Every day she looks out the window,
Hoping to see a world within,
With light, rainbows, and butterflies,
Of days that could have been.
She wonders why she sits ignored,
As her feelings leave her bare,
She thinks these feelings normal,
Depression and Despair.

At school, she's hardly noticed.
At home, she reads her book.
It makes her think of happy things,
Like fantasies of rooks,
Of knights, and kings, and princesses,
Of which she could be one.
Instead, in life, she's never seen,
And this is not so fun.

She sees these girls with their pretty looks,
And wonders what she lacks.
Their beauty? Their grace? Their pestilence?
The knives stuck in their backs?
This can't be it, this can't be true,
She isn't one of them.
She refuses to believe that to be loved,
She must be able to harm on a whim.

She focuses on studies, and scholastic things,
For she has but little pride.
And honor is for those who can find love,
Pushing good thoughts aside.
But one day, she finally vows,
That she will live life her way.
"I will find love, and they will be alone,
Then what will they say?"

She delves into fashion and art,
And finds out she's a hit.
And now she stands among the stars,
As those girls have to sit.
The boys, they love her style,
And of them she has her pick.
She finds a man who loves her for her,
Her eyes glow brighter than the wick.

Those who focus on what is right,
And stray from those that are wrong,
Can find themselves this kind of life,
And move through it merrily along.
So don't be bothered when you feel ignored,
Some gifts they cannot see.
And understand, that with hard work,
You'll escape the periphery.

About this poem

This poem is one I wrote about a girl scorned and bullied by her peers, just to find a way to live her best life though it all.
