Black Lives Matter

The system is failing,
The system must fall.
What happened to ‘all for one and one for all’?

‘All lives matter,’
Is what they say.
Do black lives matter in the same way?

Hunting, killing our people,
And there is nothing we can do.
Fighting the injustice and having it all come back to you.

You, as a nation,
You, as the people.
Fly high, black men, fly like an eagle.

‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,’
Is what he said.
Being ignored and led to the afterlife instead.

Is this what humanity has come to?
Are all the lessons from the past now left in vain?
Taking the lives of black men, again and again.

The system is failing,
The system must fall.
What happened to ‘all for one and one for all’?

About this poem

This poem was written during Covid-19 after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers. I was touched by the fact that there are countries who still treat their citizens less than what they are simply because of the colour of their skin.
