Sonnet IX

Benjamin Brantley 1984 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

My love and I sang madrigals for fun
As we exchanged our hearts, one evening’s tryst.
She masqueraded as a coyish one
And bade me steal no kisses from her lips.

Her hidden beauty kept behind a veil
Didst only serve to stir up passion’s plea
A throbbing bosom which would not be ailed
Crescendoed like a marchman’s timpani

Alas! Our twilight escapade did cease
It’s memory now floats upon the wind
Besides, she was truly a dreadful tease
She left me guessing what was in her mind

One starry night, two lovers on the lane
Wouldst dare unite, yet ne'er return again.
