Beat, Little Heart

Beat, little heart, your daddy's got you safe and sound,
Let my arms be your fortress and your rock solid ground,
That you may look upon the world not out of worry and fear,
Knowing you can meet it head-on with love as your spear.

Beat, little heart, show the world you've got what it takes,
Let the touch of my skin be the mortar when your foundation shakes,
That you may thrive even through a million doubts,
Knowing you'll surely make it through life's ins and outs.

Beat, little heart, know you're never alone and forlorn,
Let the whispers of my voice ring louder than the storm,
That you may face every injustice with love abound,
Knowing that even after I'm gone, I'll always be around.

About this poem

This poem was written for my 1-year old son, but I wrote it as if he were my 1-year old self. As I was an orphan and have gone through horrific things no child should endure, I want to make sure that my son knows and feels that he has a solid foundation on which to build, so that he doesn't have to start life out building on fear, loneliness and abandonment, which has had a profound effect on my life and everything I do and think.
