My Treats

Kendra K St John 1971 (Montgomery AL)

My Treats

The soft white light
Lit the island behind
As she peered
Into the freezer.
Chills hit her
As she pulled open
the keeper of delights.
She could feel her jaw tighten
Anticipating that first bite.
Scanning the shelves
Her eyes delved
Into crevices and corners.
Had he come before her
And raided her stash?
How selfish; how brash!
Tossing frozen veggies and fries.
Cans of juice did fly
Then roll across the floor.
That was a treat
she scrimped to afford.
That devil! How could he?
Then her eye caught the “D”
On the glossy wrapper.
She fell into laughter
So, it wasn’t such a disaster.
Dark Delights are safe
In their hiding place,
She whispered elated,
Reaching into cold
Her hands to take hold,
But the box collapsed
In her grasp. She gasped.
No! She cried.
No denying.
He ate them all!
That jerk is gonna fall!
Then light filled the hall
He leaned against the wall
And, with head bowed
And a furrowed brow
Said, I’m sorry Baby Doll.”
