The Conductor

The Conductor

When I was young, I was obsessed with Peter Pan.
Of the boy who never grew up, I was certainly a fan.
With child wonder and imagination so bright,
I would dream about one day soaring the skies at night.

Can't forget to stop by Neverland, the first star on the right,
Sing with the lost boys and challenge Captain Hook to a fight.
But on the 4th of July, I turned 25, and I must confess,
I'm still learning how to fly. It's not that I haven't tried, I do my very best.

But you see, flying is hard, especially when you have a weight in your chest,
A weight placed by the conductor, in truth, you've met him, haven't you?
He’s very persuasive; manipulation is his deal,
If you’re not careful, it is your life he will steal.

With every new venture, new prospect, or goal, I hear a quiet voice,
Whisper lies that I hear deep within my soul.
"You'll look like a fool if you do that, you know,
They will laugh and point, like you're some kind of show."

I've tried to break free, but it's no use, the conductor knows me too well,
He’s been there from the start, witnessed every thought and beat of my heart.
I know he's not evil, his motivations are stark,
He wants to protect me, keep me out of the dark.

But his plan is flawed, misguided at best,
There is no gold to be had in his treasure chest.
For residing in the light turns one stale,
So we must set sail and travel to distant sands,
If we have hope of one day finding our Neverland.
