Black is power

Amy Diockou 2019 (Leeds)

In a time of despair and tragedy
People who fought in war and lost a battle
Whipped and whipped till blood kept on dripping
Hearing the screams and yells for help
But no one attend them
What is this cruel cruel world?
Bound by chains not by mind thinking back to the ancestors before me
Doing what they can to survive
Being black is hard when I say that I don’t mean hair I mean what are they going to think of me
Are they going to judge?
Is it because of my coloured skin?
Remembering the times when people found their strength and untidy in the horrid ground
While I have a chance they didn’t yearning for their dreams but they had not yet been reached
Me giving up the instant it gets hard
But imagine them
With each passing day a prayer they send for justice love and hope to see their family again
They shared pain
Together they stood and unbreakable chain
For their legacy lives on forever and free
Remember that movie freedom writers she gave a chance why can’t you?
They fought for freedom day and night
Through sweat and blood countless times
They lost their freedom time to Time
Let us learn from the past and build a world where equality exists
May we stand together and celebrate the victories of those who fought for their freedom
