An impractical dreamer

An impractical dreamer
By: Alyssa Elharar

You are a dreamer, they keep telling me,
Null is your understanding of life
Naive and timid, totally unprepared for the practical matters of this world
Alas I dare dream, my understanding of life alters from yours
Working diligently is surely a noble pursuit
But it begs the question, what for?

Running after an aspiration assigned to you by others
Chasing an illusion of fulfillment
Pursuing an oasis in the desert
Deluding yourself that all your suffering leads to a greater end
Yet what are you trying to prove?
In the end, you'll be looking at your reflection, not others
Laughing at yourself realizing how so very trivial most of life is

Therefore live while you still can
Don’t long for life to happen, make it happen
The soul is the interpreter of life
Follow it, let it lead you down the right path
The essence of life lies in seeking the truth
And the truth is being true to yourself
True to your heart
True to your aspirations

A being not aware of its own infinite potential is a bird not realizing what its own wings are for
Don't fear your great self and settle for mediocrity, dare fly, at least try
Suffering is not noble if you do not know what you are suffering for
Suffer for something that fuses your soul with fire, your life with vitality
So Pardon me if I dare dream,
If I dare be true to myself if I do not conform to your practicality
For being a dreamer gives me vitality

About this poem

This poem depicts how as children grow into adulthood they slowly give up on their dreams in place of practicality. They stop being true to themselves and chase aspirations assigned to them by others. Yet they do not realize that by giving up on dreaming, simultaneously they are giving up on something that fuses their life with vitality and meaning.
