Poetry Is A Lightning Bolt

Charles Edward York 1966 (Saigon, Vietnam)

Poetry Is A Lightning Bolt

Poetry is a lightning bolt that hits you
Striking you to the core
Making you shudder, vibrate
Opening your eyes
Ringing in your ears
Reverberating in such a way
You are repeating the words
Remembering the effect
And feeling it in your bones.

Poetry is a cool breeze and soothing
Soft as water along your skin
It is the language of l’amour
Embracing your body
Warm as a hug from a friend
It’s the scenery of similes
Metaphors of the world
Opening our aperture
To invisible meanings.

Poetry speaks to a hidden place
Inside the Universe we live in
But hardly touch or see
We must breathe the words
And take our time to notice
Poetry is also a warning
Saving us from our demons
Raising us to better angels
A calling to live inspired.
