August of yore

Maria Russo

Joy came on a fervent beach.
The afternoon sun lashing down,
scorching pebbles,
unconcerned people all round
casually sipping the juice of summer,
and a waving of arms - untidy as out of bliss - hailing me.
Its legacy the sting
of a blurred desire,
the waste,
the grief of having been happy unknowingly.
