Shame

Shame lurks within, pernicious, tainting intellect.
It wraps round brain cells, provoking disconnect
The heart knows only to hasten its frantic beats,
As skin prickles, lays bare for claws to critique.
Shame settles in my bones, penetrating the core.
It commands my limbs to curl up and deplore.
Head bows under the weight of its load,
Eyes squeezed shut, taking blame’s road.
It burns dry in my throat, words gone in a hush.
Lungs shrink from taking a full, wholesome rush
Constricting under shame’s snakeskin sheath,
Trading air for self-disgust’s venomous wreath.
Shame's favorite organ, the mind it erodes,
Corroding once lit corridors now closed,
Veiling light with harsh untruths slowly coded
Into a mind forever self-demoted.

Anarae Silverwillow

Anarae's raw, revealing poetry explores complex emotions and mental health through the lens of childhood trauma. For Anarae, meticulously crafting each verse provides a sense of control and empowerment. Her poems traverse the spectrum of human experience - from crushing depths of despair to flickering glimpses of hope. Writing offers an oasis of self-expression where difficult truths can be transformed into art, and developing a community of readers with shared wounds brings connection. While the journey of healing is ongoing, Anarae finds solace in using finely-tuned language like stitches to mend the fragmented self. She continues to embrace poetry as a means of spiritual release, mental wellness, and deeper human connection. more…
