To Walk In My Shoe

To Walk In My Shoes

My friends have always thought of me as the strong one.
I too believed I was.
When I look in my child's eyes
I see her sense of love and security.
For I am her rock.
But I don't care how strong one thinks they are,
or how strong ones will is.

To Walk In My Shoes

When life keeps pushing you down
hitting you
blow after blow
eventually one's inner strength breaks down.
ones pride starts to vanish
To weak and broken to fight anymore
So tired and afraid of opening your eyes every morning
Wanting to never lift your head from under the covers
in fear of what awaits you that day
knowing in the next room you have this little person
this gift from god that needs you
depends on you

To Walk In My Shoes

Thank god for motherly instincts.
that take over like an auto pilot
and force you to raise your head from the covers
to face the next day
never letting your child know how scared you are
never letting your child hear you cry at night,
or see your tears of defeat.

To Walk In My Shoes

Among the living
among the loving friends, family and child
afraid that anyone of them might see
that you're not strong
So what do you do? who can you turn to?
without risking people finding out
your lost and bewildered
Scared of yours and your child's future
The easy way out would be to ask god
Make Me A Bird so I could fly far, far
away from here

But To Walk In My Shoes

Surrounded by friends, family
and a wonderfully loving child
there is no way out
Instead, I'll pray and pray
until he answers my prayers
and lifts me up and out of this darkness
so I'll wait for the light

And Walk In these Shoes
until I have nothing left

Then I'll Walk barefoot

For I am a mother
her mother
and the love I have for her
is the One thing, the Only thing
that has given me the strength

To Walk At All

About this poem

This poem means everything to me, because even though it's been 15 years or so, when I read this poem, I remember the helplessness I felt as if it were yesterday. Never knowing that depression is an illness. With help, I am in such a complete and utterly different place in my life now. When I read this poem again, it grounds me, and I feel grateful, that I did not fly away!
