A Lost Soul's Lament

I'm just another lost soul
Wandering through these cold streets,
With the weight of humanity
Bearing down on my weary shoulders.
A secular humanist, they call me,
Because I proclaim
My love for fellow men and women,
But deep down,
I find relief
When their presence is long gone.
Humanity, my friend,
It possesses a staggering
Capacity for cruelty beyond measure.
It's truly awful.

About this poem

This poem was inspired by all of the memes and jokes circulating around social media making fun of the five people dying in the submersible vehicle during an underwater tour of the titanic.

I understand. No matter how much I like or even love someone part of my essential self always feels slightly abraded by every social interaction.

There are many lost souls in this world depending on how one looks at it and the things to consider. The last four lines of the poem are right on. What they tell no thoughtful person can disagree with.
