Lunatic

I'm staring out the window,
Watching the world go by,
And I'm thinking to myself,
"What planet is making
Me a lunatic right now?"
Is it Jupiter?
Is it Mars?
Is it some distant galaxy,
Wreaking havoc
On my already fragile
State of mind?

I don't know.
I don't know much
Of anything lately.
All I know is
That I feel like
I'm going crazy.
My thoughts are racing,
My hands are shaking,
And I can't seem
To quiet the voices
Inside my head.

Maybe it's the booze.
Maybe it's the cigarettes.
Maybe it's just the general
Malaise of existence.
I don't know.
But something's gotta give, man.
Something's gotta give.

I wanna scream,
I wanna break things,
I wanna run away from it all.
But where would I go?
What would I do?
Who would I be
Without this madness
That's consuming me?

I'm a lunatic,
it's true.
And I don't think
Any planet
In the universe
Can take the blame
For that.
It's just me.
Fucked up, hopeless me.

But hey,
What's the alternative?
Being sane?
Being normal?
That's not for me.
I prefer the chaos,
The pain,
The endless struggle.
That's what makes me feel alive.

Let the planets spin,
Let the stars wink,
Let the universe expand.
I'll be here,
In my own little corner
Of insanity,
Making sense
Of the nonsensical.
That's just how it is.
That's just who I am.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
