Mine Headframes

A ghostly figure silhouetted against the sky,
The sentinel of an underground mine,
Where miners toil in the depths below,
As they labor to eke out a meager wage.

This solemn symbol of the human endeavor,
A reminder of those who work where danger lurks,
Tenacious and strong in their labor,
Yet, so often, unacknowledged and overlooked.

A headframe stands as a testament to every miner's labor,
And a monument of their courage in the face of adversity.
It's a salient reminder of the harshness of mining life,
And of the resilience of each miner's spirit.

And if ever a headframe you pass by,
Give thought for a moment to the miners down below,
With a moment of prayer and a quick sigh,
For their efforts to keep our economy aflow.

About this poem

Mine headframes are structures that dot the landscapes of nearly every country throughout the world. Most people have no idea what these structures mean but to every miner they represent a means to earn a sustainable livelihood. An engineering marvel in design and functionality.
