Liquor Store

Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

He stumbled into the liquor store,
Holding up a an old rusted kitchen knife.
"Give me what I'm after," he slurred,
As he demanded the bottle he chose.

The clerk was taken aback,
Thinking he had a thief to fight.
But the drunk just wanted his fix,
To drown his sorrows all night.

He wasn't there for the money,
He had none to spare.
Just a man on a mission,
To drown away his despair.

He cracked open the bottle,
Taking a swig with a sigh.
Ahhh, sweet relief,
As he watched the world go by.

No one would understand,
The pain that led him here.
The bottle his only friend,
In a world that didn't care.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
