Leisure

The arguments were always the same,
A broken record stuck in my mind,
She thought that love needed leisure,
Time to savour every single moment,
While I found pleasure in working, a bum,
I knew that I wasn't the only one.

I'd honed my skills as a puncher of timeclocks,
Until I was the best I could be, but as a lover,
I'd failed time and time again, feeling like a bum,
Lost and helpless, my heart aching with shame,
I longed for someone to cherish each moment,
But I couldn't see how leisure was the answer.

My partner worshipped the idea of leisure,
She believed it was the only way to be truly alive,
While I fought to make the most of every single moment
Earnestly working, but never neglecting my lover,
It seemed though, that no matter how hard I tried, the shame
Was always just beneath the surface, like a festering boil.

I couldn't shake the feeling that I was just a bum,
That I should have been living a life of more leisure,
But I couldn't help the way I was, and I felt the shame
Closing in on me, making me feel like I wasn't alive,
Until I heard her voice, telling me she loved me, and I knew it was true, my lover,
Forever ready to share in every precious moment.

Time seemed to take on an entirely new moment,
As we loved through the night, like we were young and free from any worries, not even close to a bum,
With our passions exploding, our hearts racing, and our bodies entwined, my lover
Showed me the beauty of leisure,
We were both alive, and it was then I knew that life without moments like this, was such a shame,

No longer would I feel the sting of that old shame,

My days spent working would be memory, while the moments spent with my lover
Would be cherished forevermore, and leisure, I soon learned, was no shame,

Yes, the arguments had been the same,

But now I saw that I didn't have to be a bum,

For I'd discovered the love that came with leisure, a gift from my beautiful lover.
