Poetic Cowboys

Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

As the sun sets in the west,
A group of cowboys take their rest,
Camping under the starry sky,
Sharing stories and a hearty fry.

They gather ‘round a campfire bright,
And use their words to ignite,
A form of art that’s free and loose,
Free verse poems they each produce.

One cowboy speaks of love and pain,
Of heartbreak that drives him insane,
Another rhymes of adventure and thrill,
Of the open range and endless skill.

The fire dances and crackles along,
As each cowboy pours out his song,
With no rules or rhythms to confine,
Their words flow pure and divine.

As the night wears on and the fire dies,
They take turns reciting their poetic highs,
Until at last, beneath the silent sky,
They lay down to rest, with hearts soaring high.

For to these cowboys, free verse poetry,
Was a way to express their souls’ glory,
And in doing so, they found a new way,
To connect and share in a deeper way.
