Old Friends

It's curious, isn't it?
How there is no real word
Or phrase that captures
The essence of those old friends
Who've just met.

He and I encountered
Each other by chance
United by sports
And a fondness for drinks.
We spend hours chatting away
With cigarettes and glasses in hand.
He's black, I'm white
Diverse backgrounds we bring
Yet, we both share scars
Of pain, loss, and adversity.

To bystanders, we appear different
But it matters not to us.
We are just like kindred souls,
Linked by empathy
And a humane spirit.
