It’s always the people

I stroll on the sidewalks
Blindly allowing myself to be showered by —
the yellow lights from cars coming towards me,
red from ones going away from me,
from red, green and white street lights,
from the cold wind that blows occasionally.

Yes, It is cold tonight
But these lights are warm.
I see no stars in the sky
So I dream of sending one up there someday.
Then I remind myself — that’s not me
I am the type who sends thoughts to minds!
The city is okay:
It allows me to dream.
I can look at the car lights
And dream myself someday
Showering another dreamer.

And I don’t miss home
I just miss some people there.
I wish they were here
But I don’t wish I was there.
It’s never the place
It’s always the people
This place has some people I prefer
And that’s enough
Or maybe not fully enough!

Some places have warm wind
That makes you cold
Have lights
That makes you old.

Some places shower lights that allow you to dream
Some are so dark that they keep you sleepless
But it’s never the place
It’s always the people!

I am okay with this place
Just wish there were two or three more people—
Ones who warm me when it’s cold
And cool me when I burn.
The ones who are burning by the day
Who cry at nights cause I am not there
Wish I could say—
I am there’s
But I am not there
So I can say
How can I lie?
I don’t wish I was there
It’s never the place
It’s always the people!

I could go on with this forever
And merely repeat the same words over and over
It’s never the words
It’s always the feeling
Just like it’s never the place
And always the people!

About this poem

It has been two weeks since I have moved to Canada from Nepal leaving my parents, sister and grandfather back home. As I was walking in the sidewalks of Greater Toronto, getting excited planning about my future and dreaming, I badly missed the people I left back home. I wished they were here with me. But I didn’t want to go back there. So, I took my phone out and wrote this poem.
